Dr. Joseph Carl Peus, MD has been privately practicing orthopedic surgery in Santa Barbara for over forty years, performing the first total hip replacement and first total knee replacement in Santa Barbara. Dr. Peus's specialty is revision hip and knee joint surgery. He completed a total knee fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York as well as a total hip joint arthroplasty fellowship in England with Professor John Charnley, originator of the total hip joint replacement. Dr. Peus is actively involved in the teaching of complicated total hip and knee joint arthroplasties, including for several years at the University of Hamburg in Germany. Dr. Peus graduated from the University of Southern California with a B.S. in Chemistry. After following his dream of coaching varsity high school basketball, he began medical studies at the University of Southern California School of Medicine. He interned at the Los Angeles County USC Medical Center and, after two years of private general practice, entered the four year Orthopedic Residency Program at the Los Angeles County USC Medical Center. Dr. Peus is married with four grown children and several grandchildren. He loves golfing, traveling and watching his grandchildren compete on the athletic field.
